European telecommunications pushed forward by alternatives

Broadband, mobile and VoIP services are pushing forward the European telecommunications market, it has been revealed.

A study by market research company Report Buyer found fixed-voice services are losing up to two per cent of public switched telephone network lines per year as customers cancel subscriptions in favour of the alternatives, which is slowing growth in the telecoms sector.

It is said mobile sector growth is also being affected by competition from the voice sector and regulatory controls.

A ceiling on a data roaming tariff, which is proposed to be introduced across the European Union later this year, could also limit mobile operator revenue.

This and falling consumer prices in the broadband sector could mean the fixed-voice sector loses out on compensation, the report surmised.

Britain is said to currently be leading Europe in terms of revenue in IT, telecommunications and digital consumer electronics (ICT) with an overall market worth £121 billion.

Forecasts by the European Information Technology Observatory show that despite slowing growth in the telecoms sector, the entire ICT market should be worth 761 billion euros (£606 billion) by the end of the year, Computer Weekly reported.
