Economist: We're all nomads now

In its recent special report on the rise of mobile communications, the Economist has asserted that businesses are becoming increasingly nomadic in their approach to connectivity and commercial operations.

With ubiquitous wireless and multi-function portable devices, many firms are finding that a traditional office is hardly needed at all, the publication asserts.

As mobile phones and internet services approach convergence, a "historic merger" will see mobile communications transform varied aspects of business and everyday communication irreversibly, the report suggests.

"This new model of nomadic work has become technologically feasible only very recently," the resource notes, with the rapid emergence of Wi-Fi technology allowing mobile phones to be synchronised with email and internet services.

As a result, firms of all sizes are beginning to conduct business in dramatically altered ways, with some firms realising operations can be managed without the need for a centralised office environment.

For those companies looking to operate in this increasingly mobile working environment, industry publication eWeek has suggested recently that unified communications can help to increase productivity and drive down mobile costs.
