EMEA smartphone sales rise by 38.7%

Smartphone sales in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) rose by 38.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2008, it has been revealed.

In total 11.7 million units were sold in the EMEA region, according to research by industry analysts Gartner.

Worldwide sales reached 32.2 million units, an increase of 29.3 per cent in the first three months of the year, compared to the same period in 2007.

Carolina Milanesi, research director for mobile devices at Gartner, said the beginning of the year was marked by announcements about touch screens, smartphone usability and application integration on business mobiles.

She continued: "These key trends had already emerged in the second half of 2007 and during 2008 we expect them to mature further and become the focus for more handset vendors and carriers as they expand their current portfolios to include more open-platform devices."

The amount spent on business mobile devices is likely to rise, according to research.

Datamonitor suggested recently the amount spent on mobile communications is set to increase from $6 billion (£3 billion) to $17 billion.
