Customers moving to mobile communications

New research has suggested that mobile communications are becoming more popular as households increasingly rely on the solution.

According to findings from the Nielsen Company, homes looking to cut costs in the light of current economic conditions are abandoning their landline connections to use wireless products.

The company found that 17 per cent of US households only have mobile communications, with this expected to grow to 20 per cent by the end of the year.

Alison LeBreton, vice president of client services for the firm, commented: "As wireless network quality improves and unlimited calling becomes increasingly pervasive, we expect the trend toward wireless substitution to continue."

However, the research also found relying solely on mobile communications may not suit every household, with ten per cent of landline customers trying the option and then abandoning it.

In addition, Ms LeBreton suggested the trend could spread to data networks with more people choosing wireless internet over cabled connections.

Last week, research from analyst Gartner suggested mobile communications will continue to surpass fixed connections on a global scale, with revenues tipped to hit $1 trillion (£550 billion) by 2010.
