Business spending on mobile communications set to rise

The amount spent on mobile communications by enterprises is set to rise from $6 billion (£3 billion) to $17 billion worldwide by 2012, it has been revealed.

Despite this expected surge in financing, more will have to be done to see the technology deployed, according to a study by market analyst Datamonitor.

It suggests the integration of employees' mobile devices causes security problems and business IT managers have so far been reluctant to take responsibility for managing them.

Daniel Okubo, a technology analyst at Datamonitor, said employees should be able to use mobile devices within the office.

He continued: "Enterprises are fighting a losing battle against employees when it comes to mobile devices and they should consider supporting a limited selection of devices rather than banning them outright."

Security risks with mobile communications devices are also said to be a major concern for chief executives.

A survey by the Computing Technology Industry Association found the 2,024 respondents believe risks with mobile communications technology have increased significantly compared to a year ago.
