NFC 'to enhance mobile communications'

The spread of Near Field Communication (NFC) in mobile communications could improve Bluetooth rather than replace it as a way of transferring data, it has been suggested.

Chris Roberts, country director for UK at mobile accessories company Parrot, said the solution is not designed to replace Bluetooth but enhance it and remove a user barrier.

He pointed out that NFC acts as 'handshake' for mobile communications devices and removes many of the process normally needed to transfer data.

The expert revealed: "The NFC actually extends [Bluetooth] and makes it more accessible. There's none of this searching for devices or connecting them or all of that sort of thing."

According to findings from ABI Research, the market for mobile internet devices is expected to grow by 167 per cent over the next five years, with Bluetooth predicted to gain 95 per cent penetration by the end of 2008.

The report also noted the functions which are available through the technology include voice communications, navigation, web browsing and gaming.
