European Commission approves Scottish broadband improvement

Broadband in remote areas of Scotland is set to improve after the European Commission approved state aid which will upgrade infrastructure in the country.

Public funding of £3.4 million will be used to allow people in outlying areas to access the internet at a reasonable price, Telappliant reports.

It builds on a home-based project launched four years ago to ensure 99 per cent of all Scottish households can receive services associated with broadband.

Competition commissioner Neelie Kroes said the financial boost could help those involved in remote working.

She explained: "I am pleased to endorse public funding that will allow residential and business users in Scotland, who still do not have access to affordable broadband services, to reap the full benefits of the knowledge-based economy."

The British Chamber of Commerce recently called on the government and internet service providers to pay for improvements to broadband infrastructure across the UK.

Input is necessary to improve the network as demand on it grows due to increasing online video usage.
