Wireless internet 'will dominate'

A European commission member has stated that wireless internet is set to take over wired services in the very near future. Viviane Reding told delegates at a recent joint conference between the European Regulators Group and the Radio Spectrum Policy Group, that wireless product sales would increase dramatically over the next few years, accounting for an estimated 55 per cent of broadband revenues by 2010. She also added that mobile communications could be of great benefit to its users in reducing the digital divide, increasing mobility, lowering infrastructure costs and reducing the costs associated with voice communications. Ms Reding concluded that in order to meet the increasingly mobile requirements of workforces, the commission will need to establish a model for wireless connectivity that transcends national boundaries and allows mobile communications to operate with the same level of efficiency throughout member states. A recent report from the Telecommunications Industry Association has found that Europe has the highest penetration in the world in terms of wireless internet services.
