2008 'the year of mobile broadband'

This year will see telecoms and internet providers looking to secure their place in the lucrative high-speed mobile broadband market.

In response to the growing number of businesses requiring robust mobile voice and data communications, analysts are predicting that 2008 will see real gains made in the provision of reliable high-speed mobile broadband services.

Steven Hartley argues that the current Mobile World Congress is setting the stage for a period of rapid development of wireless broadband networks.

He comments on the virtuous circle that is rapidly driving technological development as providers look to deliver on the potentials of wireless connectivity.

Writing for industry analyst Ovum, Mr Hartley also predicts that providers will look to provide closer convergence between mobile devices and laptops.

His claim is in line with a recent Gartner report asserting that by 2012, 50 per cent of the world's mobile workforces will opt to communicate on devices other than laptops.

The industry analyst predicts that vendors will increasingly look to improve mobile functionality on 'pocketable' devices such as mobile phones and PDAs.
