Firms 'undervaluing computer knowledge'

Businesses do not place enough emphasis on the computer skills of their employees, despite the growing use of IT in the office, according to Microsoft.

A survey by the software giant found that IT knowledge was ranked by 500 UK business leaders as the seventh most important skill in the workplace.

Being able to work in a team, having good interpersonal skills and showing initiative were highlighted as the most important employee skills.

However, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates urged companies to realise that IT skills are now necessary at all levels of business.

"One of the most important changes of the last 30 years is that digital technology has transformed almost everyone into an information worker," he said.

"In almost every job now, people use software and work with information to enable their organisation to operate more effectively."

This matches up with the growth in data centre use as firms continue to digitise their data to make it easily accessible.

However, companies should ensure their workers are adequately trained to make the most efficient use of these facilities, as well as ensuring they have a well-trained IT support team.
