Firms 'not fully aware of anti-spyware importance'

Making sure that computer networks are protected from spyware is often an area overlooked by smaller enterprises, it has been suggested.

According to Get Safe Online, the danger of viruses is well-known and protected against by these firms, but they remain exposed to newer threats.

"Over 90 per cent of small businesses now have got firewalls and anti-virus but not so many have got anti-spyware," said Tony Neate, the managing director of the government-backed online security initiative.

"Some people don't realise the difference between anti-virus and anti-spyware, which is an issue."

Spyware is used by hackers to view and take control of aspects of a user's computer, potentially leading to a breach of personal or sensitive information.

A June 2007 Get Safe Online report found that 44 per cent of SMEs had been victims of cyber crimes, such as identity fraud or theft.

Due to this, Mr Neate called on firms to make sure they have a rounded security system that includes virus, phishing, spam and spyware protection in order to keep their business safe.
