Expert VoIP installation tips offered

Companies have been advised that the switch to using internet-based voice calls (VoIP) need not be stressful or a dramatic change.

Instead, it may be best achieved gradually, according to Fox of Mount Alberta-based Fox Group Consulting.

She told the IT Business Canada website that many firms were choosing to bring in VoIP bit by bit alongside their traditional phone system.

"VoIP has become the de facto standard… but we're not seeing people rip out legacy TDM systems and replace them with IP telephony," she said.

"Within a single office you could have some IP phones that plug into the LAN and others that plug into the traditional TDM system - you don't have to be 100 per cent VoIP to take advantage of some of the capabilities."

Staggered installation of VoIP can allay fears that a company could be cut off from the world by relying on such a new technology.

However, VoIP is still spreading at a rapid pace, according to Jocelyn Philbrook, the vice president of corporate marketing at Canadian-based Sonus Networks.

She said that the improved broadband technology over the past five years means that connections can now "support multiple types of communications - video, voice, data - very rapidly and with a high degree of quality throughout the network".
