Encryption technology 'ignored by UK businesses'

Data systems and communicationsnetworks run by businesses in the UK are being left open to attack as fewer than half of firms are using encryption, according to a new report.

A survey by Check Point found that only 48 per cent of IT managers use encryption technology, but despite this there remains a belief among the 140 respondents that their data is secure.

Perhaps most worryingly, some 12 per cent of IT managers claimed to not even know whether encryption was in place on their systems at all.

The survey was launched in response to the data breach of child benefit data at Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs where two compact discs went missing in the post containing the unencrypted personal details of some 25 milllion British people.

But despite the public outcry and the soul-searching in government, the scandal seems to not have affected UK IT managers – with almost two thirds saying they will not change their spending priorities in light of events.

However, there were strong sentiments uncovered by the Check Point survey towards those that are negligent in dealing with sensitive information, with instant dismissal for major data leaks advocated by a third of managers.
