WH Smith introduces digital document management

In an attempt to improve its work practices, high street retailer WH Smith has turned to digital document management to replace its old systems.

The head office of the firm had been using "unreliable" archiving of its records, with WH Smith's IT manager David McGrath pointing out that the only digital scan came after staff handling and approving documents manually.

"Because we handle approximately 300,000 pages per year, this meant a lot of wasted time and paper handling," he said.

Under the new digital document management system, WH Smith's head office now scans the paper copy of correspondence or records before routing them over the IT network to accounts and then managers for approval.

This forms part of WH Smiths wider moves towards greater IT integration, with £9 million spent on systems over the past year and now plans to automate aspects of financial records for all its UK stores.
