Norwich Union invests in document management

Major UK-based financial services firm Norwich Union has added document management to its IT solutions in an attempt to improve customer communications.

Forming part of a £5 million upgrade to the firm's IT infrastructure, the new software will allow alterations to be made to stock company letters.

Previously, these had been 'hard-wired' into the legacy networking system and making it very expensive to alter even just one letter.

But the document management software interacts with the older systems to allow staff to make changes so that letters are easier for customers to understand.

Explaining the need for an upgrade, Norwich Union head of delivery, Scott McFie, said: "We've spent a lot of effort on our website to engage customers, [but] we can then still be sending out letters in some 1970s Russian typewriter font.

"If customers can understand what they are being told, they can act sensibly to important messages about their accounts."
