European businesses urged 'to practice secure printing'

Organisations have little awareness of the risks of printing and copying confidential information, it has been revealed.

The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) found just over half of European companies use authentication such as Pin codes or smart cards for printing, despite the possibility of devices being hijacked.

It has recommended all businesses adopt "secure printing strategies" to protect assets and confidential information.

Andrea Pirotti, executive director of ENISA, said it is crucial firms realise printing and copying is "not as safe as when Guttenberg started printing 540 years ago".

He added: "Crucial company assets and confidential data is at stake as even printers can get hijacked."

A recent survey revealed risks associated with mobile communications devices and remote working are currently the main concern of chief information officers.

Threats such as theft of devices or data, phishing attacks and unauthorised use or misuse of mobile devices are said to be worrying bosses.
