Data centre power consumption 'can be cut'

Small changes to the way in which IT systems in data centres are used could lead to reductions in their energy consumption, it has been suggested.

A study by computer hardware firm AMD predicted that the energy used by data centres worldwide will be some 10,000 MW higher in 2010 compared to its 2005 level.

But spokesman for AMD, Bruce Shaw, noted that even small efforts to reduce the power used by IT can result in major savings.

"Data centre energy consumption in the United States five years from now could be cut by as much as 20 percent with relatively minor efforts by data centre managers," he said.

These measure include "turning on available power management features, enabling higher rates of resource consolidation, shutting off unused servers and improving infrastructure operations," according to Mr Shaw.

If these modest changes are brought in at a significant number of data centres, it was suggested by AMD that the cumulative power saving could halve the expected worldwide growth in the sector's energy use by 2010.
