WAN optimisation market increases by 58%

The wide area network (WAN) optimisation market has risen by 58 per cent year on year, it has been revealed. However, after three quarters of "strong double digit growth" the market has slowed, according to a report by Infonetics Research. Worldwide router revenue has held at $1.1 billion (£0.55 billion) in the first quarter of the year, matching results from the same period in 2007. Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics, said the WAN optimisation market also slipped a year ago and demonstrated emerging markets "aren't immune to the occasional slowdown". He added: "Regardless, quarterly revenue is up significantly from this time last year and while vendors sounded a little downbeat after quarter one, we still think this market will pass $1 billion in revenue this year." A poll of IT directors recently revealed a third believe WAN-based activities like email are their biggest security threat, while a quarter cited VoIP as a concern.
