Vital data 'can be kept separate by virtual servers'

Companies who control a significant amount of sensitive information have been advised that they can increase its security by putting it on a virtual server.

According to Mike Chapple, an IT security professional at the University of Notre Dame, using multiple virtual servers can allow for a separation of vital data from less sensitive information.

In an article for SearchSecurity, he suggested the same method can also be applied to VoIP communications - making sure that the most secret calls are conducted on their own distinct virtual server.

However, Mr Chapple noted: "It would not be a great idea to have a virtual instance hosting your public web server and a second instance hosting your internal database server and living within the same virtual environment."

VoIP security advice offered by Mr Chapple included restricting employee access to the call service when out of the office, or only allowing certain devices to link with the IP PBX server rather than any computer with a web connection.
