Virtualisation 'will continue' in 2008

Industry experts have suggested that virtualisation will be a significant growth area for businesses of all sizes in the coming year.

A technology predictions report for the UK compiled by Gartner's TMT Industry Group says that more and more businesses will use virtual network operator services to benefit from lower costs, better security and lower power consumption.

The report asserts that virtualisation already plays an integral in the world's largest businesses.

At the beginning of this year, "every Fortune 100 company and 80 percent of the Fortune 1,000 companies had already deployed virtualisation in some parts of their businesses," the report states.

The publication of the report follows a recent prediction by Fujitsu Siemens that most businesses will adopt virtual data management systems within four years, with the possibility of all data centres operating in an unmanned capacity by 2012.

As well as being cost effective, a global move toward virtualised services would help to address environmental concerns over the power consumption involved in large scale data management systems, Fujitsu Siemens suggests.
