Unified network for Europe 'would save billions'

Creating a consolidated pan-European network could bring dramatic savings for business communications, a new study suggests.

According to Indepen Consulting, Europe's economy could benefit by as much as €1,300 billion (£1,036 billion) over the next 20 years if a seamless electronic communications network is developed.

The report finds that currently EU telecoms regulations are stifling business communications productivity due to the lack of provision of Europe-wide connectivity for major commercial organisations.

"Business users simply cannot obtain a single contract for fixed or mobile services with similar service levels in all member states," says Nick White, vice-chairman of the International Telecommunications Users Group.

Ed Vonk, chief executive officer of the European Virtual Private Network Users Association, added that IT investment must incorporate both computing power and robust network solutions that allow businesses to be linked effectively.

Consequently, Mr Vonk said, business communications services need guaranteed levels of service throughout Europe for firms to fully take advantage of the single market.

Following the publication of a report mapping the progress of the EU telecoms market, Viviane Reding, information and society commissioner, commented that more still needs to be done to encourage competition among suppliers.
