UK 12th in connectivity rankings

The UK has come 12th in a new report examining network support capabilities of 127 countries across the globe.

Consulting major business and governmental stakeholders, the World Economic Forum (WEF) examined how effectively network solutions could be used to drive innovation in a range of different areas.

Now in its seventh consecutive year, the WEF reports that its Global Information Technology Report has become the most authoritative and comprehensive analysis international assessment of the impact of ICT on development processes and the competiveness of nations.

Britain trailed a number of prominent European rivals, with Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland taking the top three spots. The United States came in fourth position.

"The successful experience of the Nordic countries, Singapore, the United States or Korea shows that a coherent government vision on the importance of ICT, coupled with an early focus on education and innovation, are key," said Irene Mia, senior economist of the Global Competitiveness Network at the World Economic Forum and co-editor of the report.

Elsewhere, in an examination of e-readiness, the Economist Intelligence Unit has put the UK eighth in its global rankings, which examined the way businesses adapt to internet-based opportunities.
