UK businesses 'unprepared for disaster'

A new report has claimed that many of the UK's top firms lack adequate contingency plans to continue business communications in the event of flooding, IT blackouts or terrorist threats.

The IDC survey found that over a fifth (21 per cent) of large businesses had failed to implement robust continuity plans to protect against such events.

Increasingly, the poll also revealed, corporate responsibility for ensuring data protection is beginning to extend beyond the remit of IT managers, with chief executive officers also said to hold a duty to protect company data and network assets.

Ed Cordin, consulting director at IDC: "Keeping the business running, come what may, has to be a key board-level concern not just one of IT."

Mr Cordin added that diligent co-operation was needed to develop a robust data network solution that could withstand external elements of influence.

He concluded by stating that "organisations that do not possess detailed business continuity plans need to act now".

The importance of an effective continuity model was realised after Mansfield council deployed a virtual network operator to handle disaster management. On the day the system went live, a connected department lost its email server in an unrelated incident.

Without an adequate network solution in place, the council states that it could have taken months before replacement servers were reintegrated.
