Two-thirds of UK broadband market to be deregulated

Regulator Ofcom has announced over two-thirds of the UK wholesale broadband market will be deregulated.

It means "competition-boosting" restrictions will be lifted in areas of the country where there are four or more broadband providers, reports ZDnet.co.uk.

The implementation of the move was revealed last week after approval was granted at European level, but there will be a 12-month notice period before deregulation commences, Ofcom said.

A period of a year has been given to allow service providers to change their suppliers before the process begins, the regulator explained.

Ofcom added in a statement there are still many areas where one broadband provider has "significant market power" as it has no effective competition.

It told the website: "Where there is less competition and where a company still has significant market power, Ofcom will maintain regulation designed to promote retail competition."

Regulation is likely to continue for the meantime in Scotland as permission has only recently been given by the European Commission for state aid to be used to upgrade broadband infrastructure in the country.
