Traditional IT departments 'outdated'

Companies have been advised that the trend in business IT is away from in-house departments and towards outsourced solutions. According to IT author Nicholas Carr, each company having their own data storage system is incredibly inefficient. "The replication of tens of thousands of independent data centres, all using similar hardware, running similar software, and employing similar kinds of workers, has imposed severe economic penalties on the economy," he writes in his new book The Big Switch: Rewiring the World from Edison to Google. "It has led to the overbuilding of IT assets in every sector of the economy, dampening the productivity gains that can spring from computer automation." Due to this, Mr Carr suggests that an in-house IT department "is unlikely to survive, at least in its familiar form". Instead, he claims that 'cloud computing' solutions will prevail in the long-term, with outsourced IT centres allowing companies to access their data securely on a server shared by many firms. "Business units and even individual employees will be able to control the processing of information directly, without the need for legions of technical people," he predicted. "The replication of tens of thousands of independent data centers, all using similar hardware, running similar software, and employing similar kinds of workers, has imposed severe economic penalties on the economy," he writes.
