Third of public data systems 'not secure enough'

Data networks installed by public services may not be offering sufficient security of private information, a new report suggests.

According to the National Audit Office (NAO), over a third of public service data systems are not resilient enough in protecting against hacking attempts or accidental data loss.

The review of government systems was aiming to measure the improvements over the last three years against Public Service Agreement targets.

And although half of the systems passed muster, some eight per cent were decried as "not fit for purpose".

Sir John Bourn, head of the NAO, said: "Good quality data is essential if performance measures and targets are to be used effectively to improve public sector delivery and accountability.

"It is good news that data systems are improving, but departments must transfer these lessons to their new data systems. If we are to have confidence in the performance reported by government, all systems used to monitor it must be robust."

It was advised by the NAO that data sources should undergo quality management supervision if they are to continue their improvements and learn from past mistakes.
