Switch to IPv6 mapped out by European Commission

A quarter of businesses will need to switch to Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) to meet new targets laid out by the European Commission.

It is aiming for organisations to changeover from Internet Protocol Version 4 to increase the number of available addresses on the wide area network, after it was revealed they could run out by 2011 if the current system is not altered.

Otherwise, it is claimed, new users and mobile devices may not be able to access the network and web-based telecommunications like VoIP could be affected.

Viviane Reding, EU commissioner for information society and media, said Europe will be "badly placed to take advantage of the latest internet technology" if organisations continue to "squeeze their needs into the strait jacket of the old system".

She added: "IPv6 provides more addresses in cyberspace than there are grains of sand on the world's beaches."

Governments and businesses across the world have been warned they need to start making preparations for the switch to IPv6 now.

China is already rolling out the system and other countries need to address the issue, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said.
