Sustainable IT 'not being pursued'

Support may be high among companies for using IT services to make their businesses environmentally sustainable; however it has been suggested that many are delaying action.

A study by research firm Datamonitor found that nine out of ten companies say they are looking for ways to cut their environmental impact through changing their IT network.

But only half of these companies reported that they had already taken action to bring these changes about.

Tim Smart, chief executive of BT Global Services UK which commissioned the study, said that this suggests many firms "may be paying lip service" to sustainability, but are not actually moving ahead with changes.

According to the study, the likelihood of a firm having started adapting its IT systems out of environmental concerns depends on its industry sector.

Financial services firms were found to be most likely to have followed through on their plans, while utilities companies were the least.

"The lack of forethought given to how to exploit this opportunity means companies may fail to see real benefit from the efforts they are making - and critically a return on their investments," Mr Smart added.
