Smart networks 'drive businesses'

Although smart network solutions are not a new concept, the ability of companies of all sizes and industry areas to benefit from intelligent networks is something that has only recently become a normality, it has been asserted. In a recent Personal Computer World article, Nick Booth suggests that smart network solutions have been on enterprise agendas for a number of years, bringing cost savings, improved security and business analytics capabilities to the larger business. "Smart networking gave corporations the ability to become more fluid. Staff could be offsite, in branch offices or working on a laptop in a hotel room and still be part of a secure network," Mr Booth continues. However, in 2008 this type of functionality is not reserved solely for large-scale enterprises, as many smaller firms gain access to business communications technology that can drive growth and offer enhanced end-user functionality, he argues. Meanwhile, a newly-released report on VNUnet suggests that smaller businesses accounted for 40 per cent of all IP telephony installations in the UK last year.
