Sluggish broadband 'can stunt business growth'

Companies with slow network connections to the internet can have their business growth negatively affected, it has been suggested. The speed of broadband services in the UK was highlighted by online guidance service Broadband Choices as a potential roadblock in the way of sustained growth for British businesses. "In terms of there being a longer term economic threat, we are a long way behind the rest of Europe both in terms of how much we pay for it and the speeds we are getting," said Broadband Choices product director, Michael Phillips. Placing the blame on the copper wire-based infrastructure of the telecoms network in the UK, he added that the effect on business will grow "especially as the amount of data that we look to transfer increases in size". Countries such as South Korea, Japan and France enjoy significantly faster broadband communications, which allow for more reliable use of VoIP telephony or web-based applications for remote working. Mr Phillips called on the government to drive forward the expansion of faster fibre optic broadband services across the country. "At the moment, as it stands, no one will make the investment and start digging up roads," he said. "It is up to government to sponsor this initiative."
