Shell outsources IT infrastructure

Oil multi-national Shell is planning to send most of its IT operations to outsourced contractors in a bid to reduce costs and improve efficiency, it has been reported.

Around 3,200 Shell staff and contractors will be affected by the initiative, with some ten per cent of these workers thought to be based in the UK.

Contracts are yet to be signed, but it is believed that the deal will save the oil giant up to £250 million a year.

A spokesperson for Shell told tech website Silicon: "We have been working on simplifying the organisation and generating efficiencies since at least 2005.

"Our IT infrastructure sourcing programme was launched to review the feasibility of outsourcing a substantial part of Shell's global IT Infrastructure services to a limited number of key suppliers."

The spokesperson added that negotiations were still underway with firms to take over end-user computing services, managed hosting, storage and network services.

An announcement of a deal is expected later this year.
