Security threats 'target commerce'

The recent rise in the number of online threats has been attributed to a refocusing on the part of criminals engineering the malicious software. Greg Day of web security firm McAfee asserts that hackers are more concerned with the commercial gains of infiltration and data theft, with many attacks now designed to extract the most revenue from targets. "What we have seen in the last few years is a change in motivation - in the old days it used to be about proving how smart you are whereas today it's about making money," he says. Business communications may also be threatened by an increasing number of websites harbouring malware, highlighting the importance of encouraging secure usage practices among employees. MessageLabs recently identified an average of 1,253 new websites posing a threat to security coming online per day during 2007, with one in 117.7 emails also found to contain a virus.
