Pirate antics 'boost data security options'?

Taking to the high seas is being explored as one way to provide disaster recovery options to firms, as a US company plans to launch the first ship-borne data centres.

Plans are being drawn up for up to 22 ship-borne data centres in San Francisco, California by new start-up International Data Security (IDS).

It is hoped that these will be more environmentally friendly than other data centres as it will use sea water to cool the towers, with a power reduction of 30 to 40 per cent expected.

According to reports, the ships will also use biofuel to provide power and re-use the wasted heat, showing that some firms are taking carbon footprint reduction very seriously.

Bringing a new meaning to offshoring, the firm is to benefit from its San Francisco location by tapping into the needs of tech firms to protect their business against earthquakes caused by the infamous San Andreas fault.

However, the ships are not only to be placed on the US coastline as IDS plans to place 28 more strategically around the world.
