Outsourcing returns 'can be boosted by targets'

IT outsourcing projects can allow companies to focus on their core business and save money through economising on resources, but it has been suggested that there are strategies for getting even more out of these contracts. Vendors at the Forrester's Services and Sourcing Forum recommended that firms should liaise with their outsourcing partner to keep track of the progress of the project. Forrester's vice president and principal analyst, Stephanie Moore, suggested that setting requirements for the outsourcing firm to meet was one way to ensure continued good returns. Outlining these targets should not be much of a problem for IT service managers, Ms Moore suggested, as "if [they] don't know what service levels they require, then they probably shouldn’t be in those jobs". But she added that keeping tabs on an outsourcing project should move away from specifics after these targets have been set and switch the focus to the big picture. "This means leaving the scorecards, attrition, re-sourcing and cost per head worries to the vendor," she said, urging firms to pay attention to the "deliverable" outcomes of the project instead.
