Old tech 'can reduce productivity'

Relying on aging desktop PCs or laptops can damage the work practices of a firm, it has been suggested.

Although upgrading systems may have a fairly significant upfront cost, it was suggested by computer manufacturer Levono that buying new systems can be cheaper in the long run.

Mike Walker, UK mobile business development manager for Lenovo, told What PC? magazine that problems could emerge with old computers, such as data loss, that can make them liabilities for a company.

In addition, Mr Walker suggested that staff could end up feeling frustrated with a slow machine and undervalued by a firm that is unwilling to improve their systems.

"Keeping IT up and running is the most important thing," he said.

"But look at what a user does on a daily basis" to find areas where new machines are most desperately needed, as employees will have a variety of different requirements from their machines.

On concern highlighted by Mr Walker were wireless connection speeds, which he suggested could soon increase dramatically and so new machines will be able to take advantage and boost productivity.

"In the next couple of years, WiMax, and 802.11n will break all the boundaries of wireless speed we've had before, and enable people to do more things, more productively," he said.

"We could see more productivity improvement from this than from just speeding up the machines."
