'Ofcom looks to speed up super-fast broadband implementation'

Major telecommunications firms have been targeted by Ofcom as the regulator aims to drive forward talks on super-fast broadband.

Ed Richards, chief executive of the regulator, has revealed it will host a working session focused on practical action later this year.

He said Ofcom will provide "an important forum for debating and resolving" key issues and has contacted key figures in the industry to initiate such a dialogue.

According to the regulator it is looking for industry leaders to commit to the implementation of super-fast broadband throughout the UK.

Mr Richards made clear Ofcom's position, stating it would like a regulatory framework that "both allows and encourages operators to make risky investments, to innovate for the benefit of consumers and, if the risks pay off, for the benefit of their shareholders too".

Meanwhile, it was revealed recently the recommendation to increase the number of internet domain names has been approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers.
