Network admin skills in high demand

Managing a network has been highlighted by IT managers as an area where skilled staff are in great demand, new research shows.

A study by consultant Robert Half Technology found that one in five IT professionals saw networking as the area where they expect the most growth next year.

Due to this, some 70 per cent of those polled placed network administration skills among their expectations of what IT departments will be looking for in the new year.

Executive director for the firm, Katherine Spencer Lee, suggested that companies will look to invest in Web 2.0 technologies next year and so will rely on network infrastructure improvements to provide the necessary support.

"We are seeing a lot of demand for the people working to sustain day-to-day operations and maintain the network infrastructure," she told Computer World UK.

"As companies work to connect more people and to use new technologies to open up their environments to everybody and everything, they need strong network skills to ensure they do it right and well."

Other areas of growth in 2008 were predicted by Robert Half Technology to include Windows administration and database management.

This was supported by comments from Vishal Dhupar, the managing director of Symantec India, who highlighted the growing importance of data management – telling CXO Today that businesses "are experiencing a data explosion, so retrieval, retention and management of data is a huge problem today".
