Most companies 'would collapse following eight-day IT outage'

Companies have been advised of the importance of strong IT support to protect their data as a newly published poll suggests that most firms would go under if their systems went down for eight days. Businesses would therefore quickly become at risk if they are unlucky enough to suffer a severe regional disaster, the survey from Gartner suggests. According to Roberta Witty, an analyst for the research firm, the results of the poll highlight a need for companies to adopt more "mature" business continuity and disaster recovery plans. "If you start looking at some of the events we've [experienced] over the last few years, companies must plan for events that actually take much longer to recover from," Witty said. "This is an issue [businesses] have to deal with. It's in front of everyone's face right now." According to the Gartner figures, some 77 per cent of companies have prepared a plan of action to bring their business back online after a fire-related disaster, but only 29 per cent have pandemic recovery plans in place.
