'More than speed needs to be considered when choosing internet services'

Businesses need to choose their internet services based on more than just raw advertised speed, it is claimed. Research by industry analysts Quocirca suggests companies should take into account how the capacity on offer matches their usage patterns and the needs of the applications they plan to use. Other factors such as reliability, service suitability and support should also be considered, according to the organisation. Their study of businesses found increasing numbers are using the internet for "business critical activities". A quarter over respondents to the Quocirca survey indicated they use it for VoIP, one in six for video conferencing and more than a third use the web for network storage. Quocirca revealed that despite this reliance on the internet, many of the people contacted - who are in charges of IT and communications at their firms - do not regard an understanding of factors such as contention ratio is "sufficiently important". According to a separate report by Quocirca, one in four companies would need failures with their internet connection to be fixed in less than an hour. For others, the use of the internet to their business is so crucial that no break in service would be acceptable.
