Mobile devices internet access 'to surpass PCs'

The number of people accessing the internet through mobile devices will surpass the number of online PCs by 2012, it has been claimed.

Industry analysis firm IDC has predicted the total number of internet users will top 1.9 billion in 2012, equating to 30 per cent of the world's population.

According to its Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast, currently almost a quarter - around 1.4 billion people - access the internet on a regular basis.

John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC, said the internet will have "added its second billion users over a span of about eight years".

He added: "In this time, the internet has also become more deeply integrated into the fabric of many users' personal and professional lives, enabling the, to work, play and socialise anytime from anywhere.

"These trends will accelerate as the number of mobile users continues to soar and the internet becomes truly ubiquitous."

Industry analysts Quocirca recently suggested companies need to take more than just raw advertised speed into account when choosing their internet services.

Factors such as reliability, service suitability and support should also be considered, the organisation said.
