Mobile broadband set to rise 'from millions to billions'

Emerging markets in Asia and Latin America are to set to drive forward the growth of mobile broadband, it has been claimed.

An "explosion" of utilisation will herald a rise from millions to billions of users, reports Reuters.

Telecommunications equipment manufacturer Ericsson has estimated the number of mobile broadband internet subscribers will grow from 250 million to 2.2 billion over the next five years.

Torbjom Possne, senior vice president of sales and marketing at the firm, told the news provider there are currently 350 million fixed-line broadband subscribers worldwide, a figure which could double by 2013.

"Even now about 50 per cent outside western Europe and [the] US are looking to use mobile broadband," he said.

"My guess is the growth will come from the emerging markets."

Meanwhile, Jessica McArdle from Top 10 Broadband has recently claimed the rise of mobile broadband in the UK is likely to reflect that of mobile phones in the 1990s.
