London hospitals sign up for free VoIP

Hospitals across London are to be linked up with VoIP communications in a bid to reduce costs and improve productivity.

Showing the flexibility of IP telephony services, the NHS system will use the N3 broadband service currently being installed throughout the health service and will let hospitals and other medical units contact each other for free.

So far 21 London healthcare trusts have signed up to the service, with another 26 having expressed an interest to join before the end of the year.

First to go live with the VoIP service was North West London Hospitals in October and the NHS trust's ICT director, Rick Juniper, said the upgrade "presents a significant opportunity for us to quickly reduce our telephony costs".

He added that "converging our voice and data provides us with a simple and efficient way to manage our communications needs".

The N3 secure broadband service being installed for the NHS is one of Europe's largest virtual private networks, with 20,000 connections so far providing a link to all areas of the health service.
