Larger firms 'spend four fifths of IT budget on maintenance'

Small and medium-sized enterprises are much more efficient with their IT budgets than larger firms, according to a new study. Research from the Bathwick Group found that large companies spend an average of 78 per cent of their IT budgets on simply keeping the whole network going, while this takes up just 56 per cent of the budget for smaller firms. While this may be explained through the sheer difference in IT network scales between companies, it was pointed out that this allows smaller firms to be more supportive of innovative IT ideas as they have more leeway with their funding options. And this may be exacerbated by the different fortunes of IT budgets between large and small firms – with 40 per cent of major companies reducing their spending in real terms, while their smaller rivals have actually slightly increased their budgets. According to the Bathwick Group, the greater confidence in supporting new IT innovation among smaller firms is being stoked by the greater connections between the IT side of the company and the business decisions. This contrasts with larger firms where the research group suggested there are more barriers between senior management and the advocates of IT innovation to improve business practices.
