Internet makes business 'more complex'

A survey of small and medium sized business enterprises (SMEs) has found that the internet has made their corporate operations more complex. Nearly all of the companies included in the study said that they had incorporated internet-based technologies such as email, VoIP or online trading in to their business strategies. But 46 per cent of respondents said that the new services had increased the complexity of business operations and had forced them to become more competitive in the marketplace, demonstrating the need to adopt a well-managed communications platform. A spokesperson for Cranfield School of Management, which conducted the study, highlighted the need for effective business communications strategies. "[The internet] has enabled them to be more innovative, more up to speed, to negotiate better with suppliers, make greater use of outsourcing and operate more flexible working hours." He added that for many businesses, maintaining effective internet technologies is of prime concern, with many finding that it "simply becomes necessary in order to compete". Security issues have also been reported as of importance to SMEs, with one analyst arguing that because of increased business communications, breaches now pose a risk not just to individual companies, but all those they do business with as well.
