Internal risks increasingly concerning to IT directors

More IT directors are concerned by internal risks to their networks than threats like hacking from outside the company, it has been revealed. A survey by Secure Computing Corporation found over a third believe email is their biggest security risk, while a quarter cite VoIP as a concern. In total, 80 per cent of respondents in the poll by the enterprise gateway security firm prioritise insider threats compared to 17 per cent who regard external threats more seriously. Kieran Lees, regional sales director for the UK, Ireland, South Africa and Israel at Secure Computing, said the evolution of perceptions of IT threats to security is "fascinating". He added: "It's also very encouraging to see that security is starting to be seen as a genuine business enabler rather than just a necessary evil." It has been recommended recently that companies thinking of a new telecommunications system should look for providers who offer "adequate security".
