ITU 'committed to satellite comms'

The secretary-general of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has announced that the industry body is committed to developing satellite technology to provide secure global business communications. Dr Hamadoun Toure made a statement at the Satellite 2008 Conference and Exhibition highlighting the UN agency's vision for the future of such communications, which included research and development for mobile by satellite, including advanced broadband mobile technology. A new study by Research and Markets has said that a period of technological innovation will result in satellite services become an increasingly attractive option for business communications. "Currently, the industry is going through a period of change, with large operators consolidating, new operators starting up, and old operators attempting to move into new markets," the report suggests. Dr Toure reported that the ITU would look to support technological developments in the satellite communications in order to provide businesses with reliable voice, internet and data solutions.
