IT policies 'key to network security'

A newly-released study has revealed that effective IT policies are paramount in pursuance of secure network solutions. The 2008 Information Security Breaches Survey, published by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, has found that staff behaviours must be addressed in order for systems to be protected effectively. IT Pro reports that the report identified a fourfold increase in the number of firms pursuing security policies, with 70 per cent of large businesses actively enforcing such programmes. Chris Potter, partner at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, which carried out the study, said: "Having a security policy alone does not magically improve security awareness among staff. The priority given by senior management makes a difference in the extent to which security awareness is drilled into all areas of the organisation." The report also noted that more firms are encouraging employees to use new technologies to further improve mobile communications, with 54 per cent of firms found to be adopting remote working strategies. Meanwhile, industry analyst IDC has recently announced that data loss prevention should be a key strategy for IT managers.
