IP MPLS VRN and ethernet revenues grow

Ethernet service revenue increased by 33 per cent to $12.5 billion (£6.3 billion) in 2007 and IP multi-protocol label switching virtual private networks (MPLS VRN) service revenue grew by 20 per cent to $13 billion, it has been revealed.

The study by Infonetics Research also found legacy frame relay, ATM and private line legacy services are the most commonly replaced.

Europe, Middle East and Africa accounted for over a third of worldwide IP MPLS VPN services in 2007, it was discovered, and both markets are anticipated to grow strongly through 2011 globally.

Michael Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research, said customer demand and IP and next generation network projects are contributing to the increasing growth of ethernet and IP MPLS VPN services.

He added: "Customers expect and get a better per bit cost for ethernet services and service providers like them because they help bring in new revenue, so requests for ethernet and IP MPLS VPN services are coming from both sides."

Meanwhile, the Financial Times reported recently that IT and telecommunications upgrades can result in greater productivity and staff satisfaction.
