Green IT 'increasingly important'

It is becoming increasingly important for businesses to adopt green IT strategies for data and network solutions, it has been suggested. Commenting recently, deputy technology editor for Computer Weekly John-Paul Kamath has said that energy-efficient practices are only going to become more important in the future as the industry is targeted by government regulations. "As more company reports mention the importance of going green, as it climbs the corporate agenda, it will become increasingly an issue that IT departments will have to deal with," Mr Kamath comments. Meanwhile, the BBC has reported recently that IBM's chairman for its climate change programme, Graham Whitney, claimed at the Corporate IT Forum that the global IT sector needs Kyoto-style climate targets if it is going to deliver significant carbon savings. Mr Kamath continues by asserting that many IT managers need further guidance on adopting green data and network solutions, with data centres proving difficult to measure in terms of environmental efficiency.
