Global IT budgets 'stable'

A new Gartner report has found that global budgets for information technology have remained stable despite concerns of a worsening economic environment. In a survey of 1,011 chief information officers (CIOs) across the globe, it was found that the worldwide IT budget remained unchanged at 3.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2008. Of those included in the study, 15 per cent anticipated a budget increase to improve business communications, while 62 per cent responded that the level of IT spending would remain the same. The aim of the study was to assess how macroeconomic pressures can affect IT budgets, with data analysed against a previous budget inquiry carried out by the firm in the final quarter of 2007. "CIOs reported budget changes that are in keeping with a general belt-tightening program rather than a restructuring of the IT budget or spending levels," Gartner noted. Gartner has also recently issued a projection of strong growth in virtual network operator solutions through to 2012, which the firm says will change how IT is managed, bought and deployed.
